This is the state of great contrasts: regional roots and modernity go hand in hand. In the last decades, it has become one of the most expressive tour places of the country, attracting innumerous visitors – especially because of the beauty of its beaches.

The State of Alagoas was one of the regions Virgolino Ferreira da Silva, known as Lampião (The Lantern), used to patrol with this gang until 1938, when he was killed. He’s the most famous highwayman of the country, a type of righteous rogue who spread terror across the Northeast region of Brazil. The "king of the highwaymen" was always with its wife, Maria Bonita, and nine other members of his gang.

Its capital, Maceió, is widely known for its beautiful beaches; followed by those of Maragogi. Along all the state’s coast the color of the sea has varied tones of green and blue, refreshing shadows of coconut palms and beautiful views to be admired. Besides, it has a history of almost five centuries of different disputes, providing historical and cultural tours that the visitor can’t miss.

The State of Alagoas is also the birthplace of Graciliano Ramos, the writer who best described the drought cyclical phenomenon in the Northeast region of Brazil. Among his several masterpieces, Vidas Secas (Dry Lives) is one of his books that best reflects his style.

In the economic area, the State of Alagoas still has high potential in the production of sugar and alcohol, although these activities had more emphasis in the past. Nowadays, the state’s economy mainly relies on the production of small factories, oil extraction, cattle raising and agriculture, with products such as pineapple, coconut, beans, tobacco, cassava, rice and corn. The state also has mineral reserves of rock salt and natural gas.

The State of Alagoas is full of attractions. Come see, and become a fan!
